Young Illustrators Award: call for submissions

I believe many of you who are kind enough to check my website are aspiring illustrators and art students.
Good news for you! Illustrative Berlin’s Young Illustrators Award 2012 is calling for submissions for you  to become the next big thing.
And,  I will be serving as one of the judges.
All young (or young at heart) and fresh illustrators are encouraged to apply. Because, I want to see as many great works as possible!

on my own.

My studio-mate just moved out. I started this studio in Midtown Manhattan with two classmates (John Hendrix and Katie Yamasaki) from graduate school upon graduation in 2003. We started from the smallest room on the floor, to current biggest room in the floor (though not so big, it is Manhattan, after all). One of my closest friends Marcos Chin was here for years after John moved back to Midwest, then Sara Varon was here for a while too.  Katie and I always stayed here, till it was time Katie moved out.

I have decided to keep the studio on my own for a while and see how it goes. The studio will go through some renovation to transition into more comfortable and cozier one person office. Wish me luck!
For now, a mess and emptiness after the move (photo below). I hope to post a nice picture of renovated space in a month or so.

e-mail server switch

Because I had some difficulties with my previous e-mail server/host, I am in process of switching to a more reliable host. Transition has been going on since late Friday afternoon EST. Currently I am experiencing some incoming e-mails delays. There is also a slight chance some incoming messages may go missing.

teaching in Venice, new school year, and Warsaw next!

Happy September. Hope you had a nice summer. Mine came and went, so quickly. But yes, it was nice.
I just got back from teaching 6 day illustration workshop in Venice, Italy. 13 lovely participants from all over the world: Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Russia, Costa Rica, Brazil, US and Canada. We worked a lot, chatted a lot, ate a lot, exchanged our cultures and backgrounds, and most importantly we had LOTS OF FUN!

As soon as I got back, new school year has started at School of Visual Arts, where I have been teaching for last 9 years. Welcome students, we will work a lot and have a lot of fun as well.
For those who are in Poland, my next destination is Warsaw in mid October. So excited. More details will be posted soon.

studio is closed for the rest of August

Hello. My NY studio will be closed for the rest of August. I am off to Venice, Italy to teach a workshop. Next one week I will be spending time with illustrators from around the world talking about and working on illustration. I cannot wait to meet them.
And hopefully, this is what I will be doing in the spare time in the evening (this photo is from last year. Hanging out with local illustrator and good friend Stefano Vitale on his boat for an evening ride)

awesome team tells how they built my new site

I love the team behind my new site. Awesome web design studio Sideways (conveniently just a block away from my studio!) talks about concept behind building my site on their latest blog post. Well, my site is still in progress with minor changes and images keep getting added. It gets better and better every day.
