38th annual Original Art children’s book art competition now accepting entries

Attention kids book artists and publishers, the Society of Illustrators just announced call for entries for their annual children’s book illustration competition Original Art. I am invited to judge this year’s show, along with other members of the jury.
All the entries must be published in the US market in 2017 or 2018, and deadline is July 20, 2018

World Cup themed art exhibit opens in Moscow

As this year’s World Cup opens in Russia, football themed group show opened in Moscow. I am invited to be a part of Ball in Art, with huge blown up lightbox of two of Diego Maradona’s most famous and infamous goals from 1986 World Cup. 
The images were originally created for soccer magazine 8 by 8.

“Works by renowned contemporary artists paying tribute to soccer have been brought together in the Ball in Art exhibition, which was inaugurated here Wednesday on the eve of the 2018 World Cup kick-off in the Russian capital.

The exhibition at Zariadie park, near the Kremlin, brings together more than 60 works from 20 different artists, including pioneering Spanish video artist Antoni Muntadas.

Three videos created by Muntadas are projected in a separate room in the 560-sq.-mt. (6,028 sq. ft.) facility that houses the exhibition.

Ball in Art also brings together works by other renowned artists such as Dario Escobar, from Guatemala, Marcos Marin, from Brazil, and Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu, whose works pay tribute to the extraordinary goals scored by Argentine legend Diego Maradona.
A light and sound concert by German artist Karsten Winkels will also be presented in Moscow during the World Cup.

The Ball in Art exhibition will be open to the public until July 23.”

GO WEST! exhibition of American Illustration opens in Vienna, Austria

I will be taking a part in this exciting show of illustrators who are based in the USA.
The exhibit is organized by Design Austria and curated by illustrator Peter Diamond who is a friend and also a former student of a workshop from about ten years ago. The poster image is also created by Peter. He is originally from Canada, and currently based in Vienna.

Prints of my exhibited works (three shown below the poster image), as well as many of the participants’ will be for sale, and they are priced relatively affordably, with trusted great quality. (I know the team who’s behind the printing of works.)

GO WEST! is at Designforum Wien in the famous Museums Quartier (Museumsplatz I/Hof7, Wien)
The show opens on June 19, and be up till September 9, 2018.

on Japanese TV

I have totally spaced out and not announced it beforehand, but I was on a new Japanese TV show 世界の村のどエラいさん (Fuji Television network) on Monday night (Japan time). It is a show feature Japanese people who are doing interesting things abroad. There is a short segment and interview on me of about 5 minutes during this 1 hour program.
The show has already aired. But if you are in Japan, please keep your eye open for the reruns.

RIZOMA Festival has started

Indie film festival in Madrid, RIZOMA has officially started today.
I wanted to make it to the event, but I happened to be traveling to Spain one week late, to a different destination, so unfortunately, I am not going to be there. But if you are in Madrid, you’d probably see my posters and banners around Madrid during this five day festival. RIZOMA will be back again in late November, and my posters will appear again with different more fall-winter color scheme.

There is a chance we’ll be doing a small talk event in Madrid before I head back to NY. No details yet, after a venue fell through last minutes. But if it materializes, I’ll make sure to post it here, as well as on Instagram and Facebook.

Thank you for California Young Reader Medal

This book keeps on giving!
I was just notified that Barbed Wire Baseball, my first picture book that was initially published in 2012 (paperback edition came out more recently), just received The California Young Reader Medal (CYRM) in Picture Books for Older Readers category.

The California Young Reader Medal (CYRM) program encourages recreational reading of popular literature among the young people of our state. Since its inception in 1974, millions of California children have nominated, read, and voted for the winners of the California Young Reader Medal.

Thank you so much for all the young students, teachers, and librarians who have read, nominated and voted for the book. Thank you author Marissa Moss, editor Howard Reeves, art director Chad Beckerman, and all the team who were involved to make this book published.
Also big thank you to Shigeko Okada, Victo Ngai and Dadu Shin who had assisted me during the deadline crunch time. Autumn Whitehurst and Gary Taxali for their emotional support and doctor recommendations when I finally got sick from stress right before the deadline.
The medal will be awarded in Riverside, California in late October.

It’s a wrap: Oscar Wilde Fairy Tales book update

I just printed out the final color proof for Fairly Tales by Oscar Wilde book project I have been working on and off for close to a year. I like it, and thus, it’s a wrap.
All the interior illustrations are now done, and I will pass the ball to the editorial and design team at Beehive Books.
The Kickstarter campaign has been done for a while, but you can pre-order through Beehive Books Online Store.
Expected completion date is sometime around the end of the year. 

Folio Society’s new collectible book: Japanese Tales just published

It’s my blood, sweat and tears! (Ok, maybe not blood, lol). I am crying with joy! I had put so much effort and love into: Japanese Tales (edited by Royall Tyler) just got published from Folio Society today.
Folio Society, as some of you may know, is a well acclaimed London based book publisher who is behind so many award-winning designs. Japanese Tales is an oversized, silver embossed, slipcased, collectible edition.
I have created, total of 8 full color interior illustrations (4 full page and 4 double page), as well as design for cloth jacket and end papers. All of which are brand new and specifically created for this project, and shown for the very first time today.
The book is sold EXCLUSIVELY through Folio Society online store (sorry, no Amazon).  They ship world-wide.

summer illustration masterclass in Vienna, Austria

UPDATES (May 8,2018): The workshop is sold out. Small number of slots are still available for Marc Burckhardt and SooJin + Chris Buzelli workshops. 

Hi, illustrators, what’s your big summer plan? How about coming to beautiful Vienna, spend four days with me working on your illustration idea skill, then spend the rest of the time wandering around seeing Klimt and Schiele in person,  then have your mind blown away by stunning architecture everywhere? Sounds like a good plan?

The first workshop in November 2015, and second workshop in summer 2016 were a big success. With participants from all around Europe and some from Middle East and all the way from Latin America, we had a dynamic and interesting small group of fun, hardworking and friendly environment for the four days we spent together.
We are having the workshop again this summer from July 16-19, 2018.  The course will run between minimum of 6 to maximum of 12 participants. You will work on multiple projects, some small some big,  that are designed to build and strengthen your idea skills. I will also give one on one portfolio review for those who are interested. This workshop’s target audience is intermediate to advanced level illustrators.

I hope you consider spending the summer with me. The rate for the workshop is EUR 600,00.
